Sloping path to upper section of back yard.

Another view of the sloping path. Grass is worn away from yard construction.
The bottom part of the right wall was shortened to allow for new,
rounded steps accessible from patio or side yard area. A flower bed was

added to the wall in the path side. Ice plant was planted in the flower bed.

Below, 2 years later (June 2006)
Crepe Myrtles flank the path. In the distance the new Urns area is visible.

Mid-slope. We dug this area down about
3 ft. to create steps at the peak of this steep slope.
This enabled us to level out the upper part of the back yard a bit more.

We brought in some small boulders, river rocks and flagstone,
and planted purple fountain grass on the left and right of the steps.

IN PROGRESS view of the mid-slope steps..

Straight on view of new steps at top of slope with boulders and arroyo
at right. Stepping stones are sunk in the grass beyond, leading to
gazebo and splits off to left towards another area.

We put in a drain under the rocks & steps to capture
any runoff from the steep back yard. The drain empties out at
the bottom of the yard into a flower bed with some river rocks

Another view of the slope and the site for the new steps.
Once we created the steps with rounded retaining walls we
raised the grassy area to make the upper area more level.
(Before photo shows patio mess due to pond reconstruction;
spa was about to be moved.)

A fuller view of the finished yard. This shows how much
of the slope was excavated to create the two levels.

Finished slope as viewed from the gazebo.
Sunken flagstone creates stepping stones to the two areas.
At right, the site for the URNS makeover.

VIEW from the top of the new steps looking down. (Spa was relocated under trees
on new patio area; a crepe myrtle tree was planted where it used to be.

View of remodeled pond and patio flower beds (on the left)
and the Crepe Myrtle tree in corner (where spa formerly resided).
